The Malham Peregrines 2019

Just a quick post to say 'Hi' to Bill (from Newcastle) Patterson with whom I spent a pleasant afternoon at the top of Malham Cove.  We had a great time waiting for these beauties to show in very testing conditions due to the extremely high winds and ever-changing lighting.  Here's one I rescued from under exposure, I hope you managed to get some keepers too, Bill.

  1. Wonderful photographs, can I ask for your settings as I'm new to Birds of prey photography and am hoping to come to Malham this week.

  2. Hi Gail, I have a 500mm lens with a 1.4x teleconverter giving me 700mm focal length, but 300-400mm will do most of the time. I choose to be wide open so f/4 when I'm on a straight 500mm and f5/6 when I'm using a teleconverter. On a good, sunny day using aperture priority you should get at least 1/1000th shutter speed but I like to try to be over 1/2000th for birds in flight. ISO should be as low as possible 200, 400, 640 or 800 max. If the light is a problem I use auto-ISO and let the camera decide as long as I get 1/2000th. Hope that helps.
