A Return to Moses Gate

As I hadn't been to Moses Gate Country Park in Little Lever, Bolton for quite some time, I decided to call in on the way back from Elton Reservoir today.  The light was failing fast but I still managed to get a few shots.

'Time to Reflect' - this smart-looking winter plumaged Black-headed Gull was giving an almost perfect reflection on what I assume was ice. I wasn't sure which way up it should be!

The 'Old Man of Moses Gate', a hunched Grey Heron, was there in his usual place.

It was nice to see a group of at least six Pochard over-wintering on the wildlife pool.  Here's one of the drakes.

And here's a redhead Goosander, probably a female, to finish off a rather gloomy set of shots.

Cormorants at Moses Gate Country Park

A quick trip out to Moses Gate Country Park this afternoon produced these Cormorant shots:

Testing the latest Nikon 300mm f/4 PL VR lens at Moses Gate Country Park

As I mentioned in my previous post, I managed to borrow the latest Nikon f/4 300mm VR  lens off my L.O.S. friend Alan Wilcox, as I wanted to compare it to my big, bulky Nikon f/2.8 300mm. I've always been troubled by the fact that I bought this lens secondhand and I don't seem to get enough good shots from it. By good, I mean pin sharp and well exposed, even when using teleconverters. Other people swear by this lens and seem to do much better than I, and so by trying a completely different lens of the same focal length, I could perhaps see if it was all down to user-error rather than faulty equipmemt. That was the plan, however things are not always that straightforward are they?

So before I returned the lens later today, I managed to pop out to Moses Gate Country Park in Bolton to try out a few flight and other shots on the gulls and other birds there. My shots were rather unscientific and I just used the lens as I would use my f/2.8 300mm to compare the results. Here's what I got:

Just common and garden birds but a good selection on a nice sunny day there.

Goosanders at Moses Gate Country Park

Male Goosander on the edge of the ice

I took advantage of some sunshine today and shot over to Moses Gate Country Park near Little Lever in Bolton.  I had a target bird in mind - Goosander.  I'd seen them in the middle of the largest pool on Sunday when the weather was a little overcast, and I'd even followed a male bird them as it flew over me and onto the nearby River Croal - but I couldn't get close enough for a decent photo.

Today however was very different.  At first I spotted three male and three female birds all sat in the middle of the pool, equidistant from all the banks and just about as far away as possible - this is their most usual behaviour.  So I took some long shots (as I've done several times before) and thought that would be it.  I then practised taking some birds in flight (BIF) shots on the various gulls and Mallards as they shot past me - I'm pretty hopeless at BIF, although I've recently examined my techniques and have got a little better.

Female Goosander

Anyway, to cut a long story short, I was pretty much done and heading for a home when I noticed a lady feeding the ducks from the boardwalk.  By accident she had managed to throw her plastic bag in with the last lot of food, and so I went to help her retrieve it. Luckily she had one of those alpine walking stick thingies, and just as I was using it to lift the bag out of the water, I noticed that there was a female Goosander in with the pack of ducks.  I was so excited I nearly dropped the stick and bag back in to the water (I didn't though).

Quickly putting the stick on the boardwalk I grabbed my camera off the tripod and began shooting and the results are shown here.  They're the best Goosander photos I've ever taken, mainly because they rarely come so close.  A few minutes later, the male bird appeared a short distance away on the other side of a strip of ice.  I couldn't believe it when it dived and swam under the ice to appear on the edge of the pack of birds being fed - I've never seen a male Goosander come for food like this before.

Wot u looking at?

However, the male was quite skittish and didn't stick around for long before going back under the ice and out into the main pool.  With a dark head and eye, it was very difficult to get a good exposure on such a sunny day - I wanted to get some eye detail, but that has resulted in the white breasts being 'blown out' in most of the photos and they lack any real feather detail.  They could probably do with some work in PhotoShop but I haven't got round to doing this yet.

That said, I'm pretty pleased with results on the whole and it just goes to show that you can't beat good light and getting close to the birds if you want decent results.

Moses Gate Country Park

The sun came out briefly today and so I shot down to Moses Gate where some Goosander had been reported as being very close for photographs.  Also present was a single Pochard, some Great Crested Grebes as well as all the usuals.  Here's the best of what I got:

I chatted with several people today, one of whom was called Steve Palmer if I remember his name correctly. He had a very large grey Neopolitan Mastiff dog with him upon which old age was sadly catching up. Nice to meet you both if you happen upon my blog!

Moses Gate CP

I had a short stop at Moses Gate Country Park today to check up on the nesting Swans, Coots and Grebes I'd seen last week.  A fuller report will come later, but for now here's a few photos:

Mother Coot shouting at me

Ah, sweet!

Only a mother could love these babies!

And they're not much more handsome when they're a little older

Not like this lovely Swan chick

I'm a bit wet!

Well I'm very wet!

It can get a bit boring after a while!

Coots at Moses Gate

With the recent very heavy rainfall and rising water levels everywhere, this little Coot was clearly taking no chances!

Here's some more shots from another Coot family

Now I know where the saying ' bald as a Coot ' comes from !
